The Craftsman GT 5000 series garden tractors were manufactured for Sears stores by the Husqvarna Group from 2009 to 2011. It is equipped with a mid-mount mower deck and hydro-static transmission. The mower deck is turned by a mower drive belt, while the hydro-static transmission is powered by a motion drive belt. Both are poly V-belts that eventually require replacement because they are subjected to wear from use, heat and weather exposure.

Preparation for Belt Removal

Park the garden tractor on a level surface and set the parking brake. The parking brake lever is on the left side, just under the operator's control panel.

Push the lift lever fully forward to the lowest position notch in the left rear fender to lower the mower deck to the lowest position, allowing access to replace the mower drive belt. Remove the mower deck entirely when replacing the motion drive belt.

Turn off the ignition switch and remove the key. Pull the spark plug wire from the spark plug, positioning the wire away from the spark plug to ensure they don't make connect while you work.

Mower Drive Belt Replacement

Unhook the spring-loaded mower drive belt tension rod from the mower deck lock bracket; hold the rod firmly to prevent the tension rod from snapping backward. Pull the mower drive belt tension rod toward the garden tractor left rear tire slowly to relieve drive belt tension. The mower drive belt tension rod is on the top, left side of the mower deck, just in front of the mandrel pulley cover.

Unscrew the right and left side mower deck mandrel pulley cover retaining bolts with a socket wrench. Lift the mower deck mandrel pulley covers from the mower deck.

Remove the mower drive belt from around the electric clutch pulley, idler pulley and mandrel pulley. The electric clutch pulley is directly under the engine pulley.

Insert the V-shaped side of the mower drive belt into the left and right side mandrel pulley grooves. Thread the belt around the remaining mower deck idler pulleys in reverse order of removal, fitting the V-shape side of the belt into the pulley grooves and the flat side against the idler pulley flat surface.

Slip the V-shaped side of the mower drive belt around the electric clutch pulley. Visually inspect the mower deck pulleys to ensure the belt is properly routed and seated in the pulley grooves.

Replace the covers over the mandrel pulleys and tighten the retaining bolts with a socket wrench. Pull the mower drive belt tension rod toward the front of the mower deck to tension the mower drive belt. Hook the mower drive belt tension rod into the mower deck lock bracket to set the tension.

Motion Drive Belt Replacement

Remove the mower deck from under the garden tractor frame to access the motion drive belt and motion drive belt components.

Disconnect the clutch wire harness electrical connector. The clutch and clutch wire harness are on the front, right side inside the tractor frame, directly under the engine. Unscrew the retaining bolt with a socket wrench and pull the motion drive belt anti-rotation link from the garden tractor frame with a socket wrench. The motion drive belt anti-rotation link is directly beside the garden tractor clutch on the front, right side of the tractor frame exterior.

Roll the motion drive belt off the right side stationary and clutching idler pulleys, and from around the center span idler pulley. Pull the belt slack toward the garden tractor rear, and lift the belt up and over the trans-axle pulley.

Slip the motion drive belt off of the garden tractor engine pulley and down past the electric clutch. Pull the motion drive belt rearward past the steering plate, allowing you to completely free the belt from the mower.

Feed the new motion drive belt from the rear to the front, pushing it over the brake pedal shaft and steering plate toward the electric clutch. Pull the belt over the electric clutch and around the engine pulley. Push the V-shaped side of the belt fully into the engine pulley groove, ensuring that it is properly seated before continuing with the routing.

Pull the belt slack toward the garden tractor rear axle and slip it through the rear trans-axle belt keeper. Slide the motion drive belt up and over the rear trans-axle pulley. Fit the motion drive belt V-shaped side fully into the trans-axle pulley groove. Guide the belt fully around the center span idler pulley, the stationary idler pulley, and clutching idler pulleys.

Set the anti-rotation link back into position on the right side of the tractor frame and tighten the bolt with a socket wrench. Plug the clutch wiring harness electrical connector together by hand. Install the mower deck in reverse order of removal.

Tips

  • Both belts should be tested thoroughly by engaging and disengaging the blades, and driving it around the yard before committing the garden tractor to regular use. This also helps to seat the belts fully into the grooves.
